In 1999 a group of dedicated and talented Welneyites got together to produce a very successful programme of events to
mark the Millenium in 2000. Part of that was to create a website, welney.org.uk,
funded by the programme to serve the community and friends, relatives and "ex-pats" all over the world.
By 2002 many of the original group members had moved away and the then Webmaster was unable to
get further funding to renew the site's hosting contract. Consequently the site became
"unavailable" but soon someone stepped in to bring the site back to life. That person was Peter
Cox, and he continued to personally fund and manage the site for the next 13 years under the
title "The Welney Website".
Peter's proud claim was that the site was totally impartial, being free of control or influence
by local authority, commercial or ecclesiastical sources. There were no pop-ups or adverts, the
content was 100% about Welney and its history, management, technical details and the
'small-print' were all detailed in the About link.
The task of reporting and recording life in Welney became exceedingly onerous, not least because
of the behaviour of Welney Parish Council, in particular its chaotic and sometimes farcical
attempt to replace its two ailing and uneconomic public buildings with a single new one.
In 2012 attempts were made to find a new webmaster, and a very capable resident came
forward but unfortunately ill-health intervened and transfer had to be aborted.
By late 2015, Peter decided his time would be more pleasantly spent pusuing his many other
interests rather than reporting the actions of a dysfunctional Parish Council
and its contempt for parishioners many of whom had worked long and hard to improve the social
life of the community. He therefore decided to shut the website down but wanted as many as
possible of the
photos and parish history pages to still be available online.
And so a new website, Welney History Online, was formed to host much of Peter's work.
Most of the content here will be in its original format although some may in time be converted to
the look of this website. Some pages may be openly available, others may be subject to registration and
a simple log-in.
There will be no programme of updating nor a facility to answer questions or assist with
family history research.
